In a message released in the context of the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (marked on Friday), the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, called on all governments to "repeal any discriminatory legislation, take measures to combat and eliminate hate crimes and hate speech, prevent all forms of violence against LGBTI people, and dismantle the structural and institutional barriers and prejudices that still limit the participation of LGBTI people in decision-making and political processes".
Borrell also said that "equality, freedom and justice must apply to everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation, real or perceived, and their gender identity".
The EU, he stressed, welcomes, supports and works in collaboration with civil society and human rights defenders of LGBTI people, who "often continue to be the object of intimidation, harassment and threats", advocating the adoption of inclusive policies.
