New airport name sparks jokes. Here are the most bizarre from around the world

In Brazil there is a Viracopos, in the USA two compete for the name of San Francisco. But there are even stranger airports, built on artificial islands and with runways made of sand. Remember some cases here.

Mundo Bizarro

Since Prime Minister Luís Montenegro announced that the new airport located in Alcochete will be called "Luís de Camões", many voices have emerged on social media to joke about the name, through jokes and memes, also recalling the fact that the construction site of this project took 50 years to be decided and will take (at least) another ten to be built.

But it is not only in Portugal that airports give rise to jokes. Some because of their name, others because they are on the edge of abysses or 'planted' on cliffs and even some because they were born in particular circumstances, there are many airports around the world that have been (and are) talked about.

Let's start with a recent controversy. Two airports in California, USA, claim the right to use the name 'San Francisco', although neither of them is located in this North American city.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) sued the newly renamed Oakland San Francisco Bay International Airport (OAK), claiming that similar names could confuse passengers.

In Campinas, Brazil, there is an International Airport of Viracopos, which has generated several jokes over the years. In fact, it was to the Viracopos Airport that our National Team flew in 2014 to play in the World Cup.

Nestled between Spain and Morocco, is the Gibraltar Airport whose great particularity is not its name, but the fact that its runway crosses with Winston Churchill Avenue, one of the busiest on the island, which forces cars to be stopped by gates when planes land and take off.

The largest passenger terminal on the planet is Kansai International Airport in Osaka, Japan, and was built on an artificial island.

At Bangkok International Airport in Thailand, passengers can play golf while waiting to catch a flight. The course is between the airport's two main runways and has 18 holes.

In Antarctica there is an airport with a runway where planes only land in the spring, after the 'harsh' winter months and before summer, when temperatures melt the ice. It is called Mc Murdo Base Ice Runway.

One of the problems pointed out at Humberto Delgado Airport is the fact that it is located in the center of Lisbon, but in São Paulo, Brazil there is an airport even more embedded in the city. It is called Congonhas Airport and is located in the Campo Belo neighborhood. The airport was opened in 1936 and the city grew around it, threatening the safety of flights. In 2007 there was even a tragedy, when a plane left the runway and crashed into a building, killing 187 people.

On the paradisiacal island of Saint Martin, in the Caribbean, Princess Juliana International Airport draws attention for its short runway, a few meters from the white sands and turquoise waters, which makes planes pass very close to bathers when they land and take off.

In Scotland, Barra Airport, located in Traigh Mor Bay, in the Hebrides archipelago, has the distinction of being the only one in the world to land on the sand of a beach. Before landing or taking off, in addition to checking the weather conditions, which are very complicated in the region, pilots have to check the state of the tides.

Changi Airport in Singapore is one of the best and largest airports in the world. With one million square meters, the space has a garden with 100,000 shrubs, more than 2,000 trees, has 60 stores, 100 restaurants and a cinema open 24 hours a day.
