A bear cub that was rescued on Wednesday in the Cabárceno Natural Park in the Spanish province of Cantabria died on Thursday after failing to overcome the effects of the anesthesia that had been administered to it.

It was the second time in three days that the animal had to be sedated in order to be removed from the risk area, the Cantabrian government announced in a statement.

The bear died in the quarantine space to which it was transported after its rescue, where it was to remain under care and observation until its recovery.

The cub had climbed a highly dangerous cliff after fleeing from adult bears, who tend to attack younger bears during mating season. It became trapped on a rock on the edge of a precipice and was at risk of falling.

Emergency teams were activated and proceeded to sedate the small bear, managing to transport it to a safe area.

The first sedation occurred three days earlier, on Sunday, May 12, for the same reasons.

"When bear cubs are 16 or 17 months old and their mothers stop taking care of them, because they are faced with the reality of life, with large males and other dangers, it is very common for them to leave their areas," said the veterinarian of the Cabárceno Natural Park, Santiago Borragán, noting that the cub was unable to overcome two anesthesias in a short period of time.
