In a statement, technicians from the Health Secretariat and the Ministry of Health determined that the entire population over six months of age in shelters will be vaccinated.
The goal is to vaccinate this entire group by Monday. According to the authorities, Rio Grande do Sul has 76,580 people in shelters spread across 103 municipalities. "This is an action aimed at shelters, but we have municipalities that have doses and are already vaccinating rescuers and volunteers," explained, in the same note, the head of the Immunization Section of the Epidemiological Surveillance Division of the State Health Surveillance Center (Cevs), Eliese Denardi Cessar. In addition, the Ministry of Health has already given instructions for vaccination actions against hepatitis A, tetanus and human rabies in the regions affected by the floods. In the meantime, as the gaucho winter approaches, temperatures have started to drop in some municipalities in the state below five degrees. Adding to the rains that are still being felt, there have therefore been appeals for donations to also focus on warm clothing and blankets. On social media, the first lady, Janja Lula da Silva, who has been on the front lines in supporting the affected communities, wrote: "the cold has already arrived in Rio Grande do Sul and the thousands of people who have lost everything are receiving donations of warm clothes and blankets to protect themselves from the low temperatures". "But they still need a lot more!" she warned. Water, durable food and basic necessities are those that the authorities have appealed for in the thousands of donations that arrive daily, the result of a wave of solidarity that is being experienced in the country, visible in practically all commercial establishments in the country. In Brasília, for example, there is practically no establishment, or public service, that is not collecting products or appealing for financial donations to help the 'gaucho brothers'. On Wednesday, with the logistical support of the Government, 603 thousand personal hygiene items arrived for the flood victims in Rio Grande do Sul, such as sanitary pads, baby diapers and geriatric diapers. "The delivery will directly benefit more than 20 thousand people," said the Ministry of Health, in a statement. There have also been appeals for the arrival of food for animals, such as dogs, cats and horses. The president of Palmeiras, a club trained by the Portuguese Abel Ferreira, transported on his private plane, on Wednesday, veterinarians, three tons of food and medicines for rescued animals. Although the authorities have managed to restore water and electricity services to 95% of homes, there are still many people without access to electricity and, therefore, to communications and warnings from rescuers. For this reason, the Jovem Pan communication group joined other initiatives taking place in the country, for a campaign to donate battery-powered radios and batteries. "This initiative aims to provide a means of essential communication for these families, allowing them to receive vital information about safe places and important guidance in times of crisis," wrote the group. At least 152 people have died and 104 are still missing due to the floods in southern Brazil, the Civil Defense said in a new report. According to regional authorities, around 615 thousand people are displaced. The state of Rio de Grande do Sul, which borders Argentina and Uruguay, is experiencing the most dramatic situation, with 151 dead, 90% of the municipalities affected and 2.1 million people affected. In the neighboring state of Santa Catarina, one death was recorded. Read Also: Nome de novo aeroporto deu azo a piadas. Eis os mais bizarros do mundo (Portuguese version)
