A man suspected of raping two women in 1989 has been identified through genetic genealogy and is wanted by Massachusetts authorities in a crime that “haunted the Framingham community for decades.” Stephen Paul Gale, 71, is facing four counts of aggravated rape, two counts of kidnapping and one count of armed robbery, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday. The armed man entered a Framingham clothing store on the morning of Dec. 27, 1989, according to ABC News . He forced a 29-year-old woman to give him money from the store safe and her own wallet. He then forced an 18-year-old employee to lock the doors and put up a sign indicating the store would open late. He then raped both women at gunpoint. The suspect’s DNA was collected and entered into a national database, but no matches were found. In 2022, investigators began working with Parabon Nanolabs, which obtained DNA samples from Gale’s relatives and confirmed he was the man responsible for the crimes. Framingham Police Chief Lester Baker thanked the victims for their bravery, saying “we would never have been able to solve this horrific crime without them.” The U.S. Marshals Service is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of the man, who has also used the aliases Stephen Pisarcik, John Rossi, Paul Costa, Paul DeRosa, Paul DiCarli, Paul Joseph DeCarlo, Steve Miner, Paul Williams and Paul Ptaszynski.
