Spanish police on Thursday dismantled a major drug trafficking network of Mexico's Sinaloa cartel after seizing 1.8 tons of methamphetamines that operated out of Tenerife, Madrid, Valencia and Alicante in Spain.

The National Police described it as the largest seizure of methamphetamines ever in the country, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

Five people were arrested in the police operation, a Mexican national — who was identified as the group's leader — three Spanish men and a Romanian.

Officer Antonio Martínez hailed the “eradication of this group,” as police believed the cartel was trying to establish a presence in Spain.

The group allegedly used houses in isolated areas to store shipments of methamphetamines that had been smuggled in, before loading the drugs into vehicles with false bottoms to send them to other European countries.

“In the National Police we thought that Mexican cartels were not established in Spain, but due to the pressure they are under in other parts of Europe, we are seeing how they are trying to start operations or set up clandestine laboratories in Spain to produce drugs,” Martínez said.

The investigation is ongoing, with Spanish authorities saying more arrests could follow.
