"Schools should not teach the controversial issue of gender identity"
The UK's Education Secretary has said that while transgender issues should be taught, "schools should not teach about the contested area of gender identity, including the idea that gender is a spectrum".

The UK's Education Secretary Gillian Keegan has argued in draft guidance published on Thursday that "schools should not teach about the contested issue of gender identity", amid concerns that children were being exposed to "inappropriate" content.
In a foreword to the document, which says no child under nine should be taught about sex, the minister said the guidance was based on the premise of giving pupils "the right information at the right time", while seeking to ensure that "children's innocence" is not "eroded too quickly" by exposure to such topics "too soon", Sky News reported.
The minister said that while transgender issues should be taught, "schools should not teach about the contested issue of gender identity, including the idea that gender is a spectrum".
She said there was "evidence" that pupils were being taught in some schools that there could be "72 genders" and that gender could "vary on a daily basis".
However, the NSPCC has criticised the imposition of age restrictions, arguing that children and young people should be empowered to "recognise when something is not right and seek help when they need it".
The children's charity added that it should be a time to "embed" teaching on life-enhancing skills, rather than "going backwards".
Meanwhile, Labour's shadow education secretary, Catherine McKinnell, said in the House of Commons that "teaching children about the facts of the world they are growing up in must include understanding that there are people who are transgender, that people may go through a process of transitioning and that the law provides for that".
