A baby who spent the first six months of her life in the hospital after being born weighing just over a pound has finally gone home.

Nyla Brooke Haywood was discharged from Silver Cross Hospital in Illinois, US, on Monday to cheers from "Team Nyla" — the medical staff who have cared for her since her birth last year.

Nyla was born at just 22 weeks gestation and weighed just over a pound, ABC Chicago affiliate WLS-TV reported.

"It was a very scary time," her mother, Nakeya Haywood, said at a press conference Monday at Silver Cross Hospital.

Haywood was diagnosed with preeclampsia, a condition characterized by high blood pressure that can affect several organs in the body, including the liver, kidneys and brain, after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

In some cases, complications from the condition can include being induced into labor to help protect the health of the mother and baby, which is what happened with Haywood.

Because of Nyla's low birth weight, she was considered a micro-preemie, which put her at a higher risk for complications. Dr. Corryn Greenwood, medical director of the neonatal intensive care unit at Silver Cross Hospital, said Nyla's lungs were "very underdeveloped" when she was born and her skin was translucent.

Despite the odds, Nyla showed her determination to live from the start, according to Dr. Mario Sanchez, a neonatologist at the hospital. "She cried when she was born. It was a little cry, but it was a cry. And she just started fighting," he said, adding that the baby girl continued to improve in the months that followed.

Nyla weighed 11 pounds, 5 ounces when she was discharged from the hospital Monday. "Honestly, I have no words. I'm just so grateful that she's healthy and thriving," her mother said.
