An elementary school principal in Florida was arrested Saturday and charged with keeping a child locked in a room for 40 minutes. He also allegedly put the child in a chokehold and struck him with a phone charger cord.

Dontay Akeem Prophet, 33, was the principal of Destiny Leadership Academy in Ocala and has been charged with aggravated child abuse and false imprisonment of a child under 13, the Marion County Sheriff's Office said, according to NBC News.

He has been fired from the private school, the outlet reported.

Prophet, who has pleaded not guilty, said he confined the child to keep him from hurting himself, but authorities said they do not believe that.

The child was actually being abused by the man, said Valerie Strong, a sheriff's office spokeswoman. "He began to strike the child with an open hand and push the child around, and that's when the physical abuse started."

Surveillance video footage showed that the former principal kept the boy in the classroom for about 40 minutes, where he slapped the child in the face, put him in a chokehold and struck him with a phone charger cord, according to the outlet.

A judge on Tuesday denied a request to keep the suspect in jail before trial, and his bond was set at $50,000.
