"The civilians who tried to escape from the territory occupied by the Russians are being held captive. According to initial data, there are between 35 and 40 of them. The Russians are keeping them together, using them as human shields," said the head of the regional police investigation department, Serhiy Bolvinov.

"We know that the Russians cynically shot an elderly man who was trying to escape to territory controlled by Ukraine," Bolvinov added, ensuring that the man was shot in the head.

This information confirms what was said by the Ukrainian Interior Minister, who reported the existence of civilians taken prisoner in Vovchansk, as well as at least one summary execution.

Russian soldiers have been accused of numerous documented abuses in Ukraine, in particular a massacre of civilians in Bucha, a suburb of Kyiv occupied at the beginning of the invasion.

Moscow denied these crimes committed in the spring of 2022, claiming that it was a Ukrainian staging, despite the numerous testimonies, clues and evidence implicating the Russian military.

In northern Ukraine, in the village of Yahidne, 367 of the approximately 400 inhabitants, including about 50 children, were forcibly grouped by the Russians in cellars without windows or bathrooms, where they remained for 27 days, in March 2022, until the liberation of this locality by the Ukrainian Army.

At that time, 11 people died in that village and these cellars, nicknamed "death cellars", became a symbol of the war crimes committed against civilians.

Russia is accused of other war crimes, such as the deportation of Ukrainian children, and Vladimir Putin has been the target of an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court.
