In a statement, the UN coordinator said the “deeply distressing news” from Kherson indicated that “dozens of civilians, including two children, were injured in the attacks” and that homes and educational facilities were “hit once again in this war-battered city.”

Local authorities said Russian airstrikes wounded 17 civilians in Kherson on Wednesday, adding to six others hurt in Mykolaiv, also in southern Ukraine.

Brown said the news came a day after she visited the frontline Kharkiv region, where Russia has launched a major offensive in the past week, opening a new front in the war.

“I witnessed the terrible toll the intensifying Russian Federation armed forces’ attacks are having on thousands of people forced to flee for their lives, leaving everything behind,” the UN coordinator said, adding that “many are elderly, fearing they may never return.”

Between May 9 and 15, the Russians gained 257 square kilometers in the Kharkiv region alone, according to an analysis released Thursday by Agence France-Presse based on data provided by the Institute for the Study of War.

Emergency services said 8,800 people have been evacuated from the region in recent days.

Brown said that “the humanitarian community is working tirelessly to support people through this unfolding human tragedy,” while calling for respect for international humanitarian law.

“The safety of civilians, homes, schools and hospitals must be guaranteed. They are not a target,” she said.
