The president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, condemned on Thursday the attack against the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, who was shot at the exit of a government meeting in the city of Handlová, considering that "situations of intolerance and violence" like this "deserve repudiation".

"It is unacceptable what happened yesterday in Slovakia with the Prime Minister Robert Fico. Situations like these, of intolerance and violence, deserve our repudiation and affect us all, for they attempt against our values of defense of democracy and peace", said Lula da Silva in a publication on the social network X (former Twitter).

In the note, the Brazilian president also stated that "hatred cannot prevail" and left a message of "solidarity to Robert Fico and to the Slovak people", also wishing him a "quick recovery".

It is worth remembering that Robert Fico, 59 years old, is in a "very serious" condition, although out of danger, according to the Roosevelt hospital, in Banska Bystrica (center), where he underwent a several-hour surgery, after being shot on Wednesday by a shooter whose motivations are still unclear.

The attack against the Prime Minister happened in front of the local House of Culture, from where Robert Fico, 59 years old, was leaving after a Government meeting.

The Prime Minister was shot in the chest and abdomen by a 71-year-old man, who was arrested. Robert Fico was taken to the hospital, where he remains.

Since he came to power, in 2023, Robert Fico put an end to Bratislava's military aid to Ukraine and appealed for peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow, generating criticism from Ukrainian authorities and their European allies.
