Russia's peace plan? 'Mass murder of civilians' in Kharkiv

"The true attitude of the russian federation towards any format of peace and negotiations is a maximally destructive attempt to strike the major Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, with millions of citizens," the adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on the Telegram social network (formerly Twitter).
Russia launched a surprise large-scale military offensive on Kharkiv last week, opening a new front in the war.
The shelling is aimed at the "mass murder of civilians in border cities", Podolyak said.
The Ukrainian official noted that the attacks are taking place "on the eve of the peace summit in Switzerland."
"All these talks are only about: either recognizing Russia's right not to lose and to impunity for war crimes or giving Russia time for an operational pause to prepare for the next (more permissive) stage of the war," Podolyak concluded.
Recall that Zelensky and other members of the Ukrainian government traveled to Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine today.
The leader said that "the situation is generally under control," but "remains extremely difficult," so Ukrainian troops are currently "reinforcing units."
Between May 9 and 15, the Russians conquered 257 square kilometers in the Kharkiv region alone, according to an analysis released today by Agence France-Presse (AFP) based on data provided by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Emergency services have recorded 8,800 people evacuated in the region in recent days.
