A firefighter from Mullion Community Fire Station in Helston, Cornwall, England, has adopted a terrier named Martha after rescuing her from the home of her late owner.
James Trounson, 52, was among the firefighters called out in April when a woman was found dead inside her home. "We were tasked with removing the deceased female from the property and I was tasked with removing the animal myself," he told Fox News Digital.
Trounson said that when they arrived at the scene, they found the woman's eight-year-old pet terrier, Martha, by her owner's side.
"The little terrier took a bit of coaxing to come to me, [but] eventually she just jumped into my arms," he recalled.
With no known next of kin to take the dog, the firefighter suggested taking her to the animal welfare charity where he had adopted his collie, Merlin, four years ago. "I was always looking to get a companion for Merlin, so the police said I could have her," he added.
After taking her to the vet, Trounson officially became the dog's owner.
The Helston Community Fire Station posted about the incident on Facebook, saying that Martha was "a very happy little dog." "Out of tragedy, sometimes comes happiness," it added.
