Italy is home to the world’s fastest 90-year-old sprinter. This month, Emma Maria Mazzenga set a new world record in her age group when she ran the outdoor 200 meters in 51.47 seconds.

Emma, who was born on August 1, 1933, is something of an unsung star in Italian athletics. She holds five world records, nine European records and 28 Italian bests in various sprinting categories, according to Reuters.

"I am very happy and satisfied, and also a bit surprised because I didn’t think I was that fast,” the nonagenarian said after beating the previous record of 53.35 seconds set by Japan’s Emiko Saito in 2022.

Secrets of a record-breaker? Run without socks

Like many athletes, Emma has her own quirky rituals when it comes to racing: she always runs without socks and never wears the same shoes that she uses in training.

She also likes to celebrate her victories with a beer with her opponents after the race, even though she usually has no direct rivals in her category.

"If I don’t have any rivals, I know that I will win from the start, so my aim is to do a good time,” she said.

Emma competed as a young woman but stopped for many years after she got married and had children. She only took up masters athletics when she was 53 and it has provided a great source of comfort in Mazzenga’s later years.

"It has helped me overcome some difficult moments, which have not been lacking in such a long life,” she said, adding that running “has also allowed me to always be surrounded by many people, to never be alone.”

Her next competitive outings are coming up soon, although she jokes that she prefers “not to make long-term plans.”

In June, the Italian championships are on the agenda and next year she will be off to the World Masters Athletics Championships in Sweden.
