Police began dismantling a pro-Palestinian encampment at DePaul University in Chicago early Tuesday, hours after the school’s president told the students they must leave the site or face arrest.

Workers cleared out tents and equipment from the student encampment as a few protesters gathered across the street.
All of the encampment participants “left voluntarily” when police arrived early Thursday morning, said Jon Hein, a deputy chief with the campus police department. “There were no confrontations, and there were no arrests,” he told reporters. “As we approached, they all voluntarily left the area.” Hein said, however, that two young men were arrested outside the encampment “for obstructing traffic.” The decision to clear the encampment came less than a week after the university’s president said public safety was at risk. The university had said Saturday that it had reached “an impasse” with those camped out on campus. Most of DePaul’s graduation ceremonies are scheduled for the weekend of June 15-16. Students at several U.S. universities have staged similar encampments, calling on their schools to divest from companies that do business with Israel because of its treatment of Palestinians in Gaza. Many of the protests have led to arrests, with more than 2,900 people detained since mid-April, according to the Associated Press. Israel launched a military operation in the Gaza Strip after Hamas militants fired rockets into Israel on July 8, 2014, killing one Israeli and wounding dozens. The Israeli military offensive in Gaza has killed more than 35,000 people, according to Palestinian officials.
