House approves bill to send weapons to Israel
The U.S. House of Representatives voted late Tuesday to force the White House to send to Israel a weapons shipment that the Biden administration blocked last week.

The measure passed by a vote of 224 to 187. Sixteen House Democrats backed the measure seeking to overturn Biden’s determination, despite party leaders whipping against it.
Biden has already said that if the measure advances through the legislative process — it would also need to pass the Democratic-controlled Senate — he would veto it.
“We strongly oppose efforts to restrict the President’s ability to allocate United States security assistance in accordance with U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives,” the White House said in a statement.
Biden likely won’t have to follow through on his veto threat, as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has said he has no plans to bring the measure up for a vote.
Speaking at a news conference before the vote, House Republican Conference Chair Mike Johnson of Louisiana said that “it’s clear that Biden and Schumer have turned their backs on Israel.”
Republicans, who control the chamber, brought the measure to the floor last week after it was reported that the White House had blocked a weapons shipment to Israel amid concerns about an escalation of violence in the Gaza Strip.
The shipment in question is for 3,500 bunker-busting bombs. Biden later acknowledged in an interview that civilian casualties in Gaza have resulted from the use of U.S.-made weapons.
The move drew sharp criticism from Republicans and some pro-Israel Democrats.
In addition to requiring the administration to send the weapons to Israel “without delay,” the bill passed by the House also would freeze funding for the Pentagon, the State Department and the National Security Council until the shipment is made.
