At least four people have died in Houston, southeast Texas, in the United States, following the severe storms that have hit the state in recent days, especially on Thursday night. Falling trees and a crane that was knocked over by strong winds are being blamed for the deaths.

According to the Associated Press news agency, the heavy rain caused serious damage, especially in the city centre. Windows were blown out of some buildings, numerous trees were felled and more than 900,000 homes and businesses were left without power.

"Stay home tonight. Don't go to work tomorrow unless you're an essential worker. Stay home, take care of your kids," said Houston Mayor John Whitmire on Thursday night.

Wind gusts reached speeds of 160 kilometres per hour, said the mayor, who predicted: "Downtown [Houston] is a mess."

As a result of the storm, classes in the Houston school district were cancelled on Friday, affecting around 400,000 students, and the city's two main airports temporarily suspended the arrival and departure of planes.
