A man was shot dead by police as he tried to "set fire to a synagogue" in Rouen, France, on Friday.

The incident was reported by the newspaper Le Figaro, which said that police arrived at the scene at around 6:45 a.m. (5:45 a.m. in mainland Portugal), alerted after smoke was seen coming from the religious building.

Armed with a knife and an iron bar, the man advanced towards the police officers who were responding to the incident, and one of them ended up fatally shooting him with his firearm.

The mayor of Rouen, Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, reported that there were no other victims of the incident. The firefighters, in turn, took on the mission of controlling the fire at the place of worship, added Mayer-Rossignol, on the X (former Twitter).
