North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles off its eastern coast on Friday.

The launches come a day after South Korea’s military conducted a joint military exercise with the United States, the South Korean military said.

The launches were fired from the Wonsan area at around 3:10 p.m. (7:10 a.m. Portugal Continental), South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said, according to the Associated Press. South Korea’s military has strengthened its surveillance posture and maintains a readiness posture in response.

On Friday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, said the country’s recent weapons tests were part of a five-year plan launched in 2021 to strengthen the country’s defenses. She said the weapons are meant to target Seoul, the South Korean capital, denying that they are meant to be exported to Russia.

“We do not hide the fact that such weapons will be used to deter any possible military action by the enemy,” she said, according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency.

On Thursday, two South Korean F-35As and two U.S. F-22 Raptors conducted joint air drills over the central region of South Korea.

Several countries, including the United States and South Korea, have accused North Korea of supplying artillery, missiles and other weapons to Russia for its war in Ukraine in exchange for advanced military technology and economic aid, allegations that North Korea and Russia have repeatedly denied.

Foreign experts believe that North Korea’s recent spate of short-range missile and artillery tests were meant to test or advertise weapons systems it planned to sell to Russia.

“It is the most absurd paradox which is not worth taking into consideration or giving any response to,” Kim Yo Jong said.

Kim, who is a member of North Korea’s powerful National Defense Commission, also said that North Korea’s recent weapons tests were conducted as part of the country’s five-year weapons development plan, which was unveiled in 2021.

The deepening ties between North Korea and Russia come as both countries are locked in separate confrontations with the United States — North Korea over its advancing nuclear program and Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
