"In the Kharkiv region, 10 battles took place. Our soldiers repelled all the attacks of the Russians in the settlements of Lippy, Starytsia and Vovchansk," said Oleg Sinegubov, head of the Military Administration of the Kharkiv region, northeast of Ukraine, next to the border with Russia.
Sinegubov, through social media, added that Russian forces are still trying to break through Ukrainian defenses towards Vovchansk.
However, he said that the situation inside the city - which has seen fighting in the far north in recent days - is under "control" of Ukrainian forces.
In a speech to the nation on Thursday night, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukrainian troops are launching counterattacks in several areas of the Kharkiv front.
Zelensky also spoke of the intensification of fighting in other areas of the contact line, such as Pokrovsk and Kramatorsk, both in the eastern Donetsk region, where Russia continues to advance after opening a new front in Kharkiv last Friday.
The Ukrainian head of state has repeatedly warned that the Russians have opened this new front to force Ukrainian troops to disperse and neglect other fronts.
