Ukrainian forces launched multiple drone strikes in Crimea and southern Russia between Thursday and Friday, according to the Associated Press (AP).
A woman and her four-year-old son were killed late Thursday when a Ukrainian drone hit their car in Oktyabrsky, said Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of the Belgorod region.
The Russian Defense Ministry said 51 Ukrainian drones were shot down over Crimea, 44 over the Krasnodar region and six over the Belgorod region. Russian warplanes and patrol boats also destroyed six naval drones in the Black Sea.
The strikes also caused power outages in the Crimean city of Sevastopol. The city’s governor said the local power plant was hit by drone debris and that electricity would likely not be restored for up to a day.
“Utilities are doing everything they can to restore the energy system as soon as possible,” Mikhail Razvozhayev said in a statement, adding that schools and kindergartens in Sevastopol were temporarily closed because of the power cuts.

Other Ukrainian strikes damaged aircraft and a fuel storage facility at the Belbek air base near Sevastopol, according to satellite images released by Maxar Technologies and cited by the AP.
In the Krasnodar region of southwestern Russia, a drone strike early Friday set fire to an oil refinery in Tuapse. The blaze was later contained and there were no casualties, Russian media reported, citing unverified videos that purportedly showed the attack.
Ukrainian drones also targeted Novorossiysk, a major Black Sea port. Debris from downed drones caused several fires, but there were no casualties, said Krasnodar regional governor Veniamin Kondratyev.
Russia’s Astra news outlet, citing unnamed sources, said the attack may have hit two oil depots in Novorossiysk and two terminals in the port area.
The Russian military regularly claims to repel Ukrainian drone attacks, but it has rarely said it has shot down so many.
Ukraine has not yet commented on the strikes. In recent months, Kyiv has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks on industrial and energy facilities in Russia.
The drone strikes come as Russian forces press an offensive in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region, partly to try to stop attacks on territory in Russia’s Belgorod region.
