"Within a week, the units of the Northern Group (...) liberated 12 localities in the Kharkiv region (...) and continue to advance towards the enemy's defenses", the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
The ministry added that Russian forces continue to "penetrate deeper into the enemy's defensive lines", according to the Spanish agency EFE.
According to estimates by the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russian forces will have advanced eight kilometers into Ukrainian territory after a week of offensive in the Kharkiv region.
The objective of creating a security zone along Russia's border with Ukraine was announced today by Russian President Vladimir Putin during a visit to China.
Putin described the offensive in northeastern Ukraine as a response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory.
"I had said publicly that if this continued [the Ukrainian attacks], we would be forced to create a security zone, a sanitary zone. That is what we are doing", he said, quoted by the French agency AFP.
Kharkiv, the capital of the region, is the second largest city in Ukraine.
It had more than 1.4 million inhabitants before the war triggered by the Russian invasion of February 2022.
Putin also said that, for now, Russia had no plans to take Kharkiv.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky previously acknowledged that the situation in Kharkiv was very complicated, but that Kiev could not lose the city to the Russian enemy.
Zelensky visited the region on Thursday, after having canceled commitments abroad, including visits to Spain and Portugal.
