Police "announced the identification and arrest of a large number of members of a Satanist network that has been dismantled", Irna reported.

The arrests of "146 men and 115 women" were announced, who "were in an inappropriate and obscene state with emblems, signs and symbols of Satanism on their clothes, faces and hair", the agency said, citing a police statement.

"Three European nationals" were also arrested during the operation carried out in the city of Shahryar, west of Tehran, on Thursday night, the same source said without specifying their nationality.

"Symbols of Satanism, alcoholic beverages and psychoactive substances as well as 73 vehicles were seized," the text said.

The Iranian authorities generally link 'rock' music concerts, particularly 'hard rock', which are banned in the Islamic Republic, to Satanic ceremonies. Alcohol consumption is also strictly prohibited in the conservative country.

In July 2009, police arrested three people in the northwestern province of Ardebil for "Satanic proselytism".

In May of the same year, 104 "Satan worshippers" were arrested during a concert in the south of the country, where participants allegedly consumed alcohol and "sucked blood".
