Former Russian President and current Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, commented on Thursday on the attack on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who was shot after a meeting of the Slovak government in Handlova on Wednesday.

Fico, it should be noted, came to power in 2023 and ended Bratislava's military aid to Ukraine and called for peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow, drawing criticism from Ukrainian authorities and their European allies. However, for the former Russian president, the Slovak "is not pro-Russian in any way", but rather "just pragmatic and not Russophobic".

"Would it be surprising that for the first time in decades an assassination attempt was made in Europe against a politician who took a reasonable position towards Russia?", Medvedev began by questioning on the Telegram platform.

"By the way, he is not pro-Russian in any way. Just pragmatic and not Russophobic", he considered.

Medvedev said that he has not communicated with Robert Fico since 2008, the year he was elected president of Russia, but describes him as someone who "has not lost touch with reality and does not want his citizens to turn into radioactive ash", something that made him "a target".

"There are only a few people like the Slovak prime minister in Europe. And they urgently need to take care of their safety", he warned.

About Fico's attacker, a 71-year-old Slovak writer, Medvedev considered him to be a "fierce outcast of the intelligentsia". "His actions are the quintessence of the new Europe: idiotic, Russophobic, unrestrained vassal and completely headless", he accused.

Robert Fico, 59, was shot several times as he left a government meeting in the city of Handlova, and is still in serious condition. The attacker justified the attack with the fact that he did not like the government's policies.
