Georgia's prime minister joined tens of thousands of people marching through the capital on Saturday to mark Family Purity Day, which celebrates so-called traditional family values in a country with a strong history of animosity toward sexual minorities.

The Day of Traditional Family Values, established by the Georgian Orthodox Church in 2013, was also celebrated in more than 20 other cities.

Liberal groups complained that the event coincided with the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili were among the participants in the march in Tbilisi, which ended at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, where Kobakhidze praised the event for "protecting the country's identity, language and faith".

In March, the ruling Georgian Dream party introduced a bill restricting the rights of LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) people.

If passed, the bill would ban sex reassignment surgeries, same-sex adoption of children and gatherings that could be seen as promoting same-sex relationships.

Georgian Dream has also pushed through a law requiring media outlets and non-governmental organisations to register as "foreign agents" if they receive more than 20% of their funding from abroad.

The legislation sparked mass protests in Tbilisi earlier this month, with the opposition calling it a "Russian law" because it mirrors similar legislation in force in Russia.

Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili has said she will veto the measure, which opponents say would hamper Georgia's bid to join the European Union, but its backers have enough votes in parliament to override her veto.

Tensions run high in Georgia over sexual minorities. Last year, hundreds of anti-gay protesters stormed an LGBTQ festival in Tbilisi, forcing its cancellation.
