A rare species of squid has been caught trying to ‘spook’ a camera almost a kilometre down in an area known as the Samoan Passage.

The moment was captured by scientists from The University of Western Australia and UK-based company Kelpie Geosciences, who were deploying the camera system.

After retrieving the equipment from depths of more than five kilometres, the researchers were surprised to find a rarely seen deep-sea dumpling squid in its natural habitat, according to a statement from the university.

“As we reviewed the footage, we realised we had captured something quite rare,” said Heather Stewart from Kelpie Geosciences.

The species is one of the largest of the deep-sea squids and is known to have the largest light organs in the natural world at the tips of two of its tentacles, which produce dazzling bioluminescent flashes to startle and disorientate prey while hunting.

“The squid, which was about 75 centimetres long, descended on the camera thinking it was prey and tried to scare it off with its huge bioluminescent headlights. It wrapped its tentacles around the camera, which captured the encounter in even more detail. I think we were very lucky to witness this,” she said.

Professor Alan Jamieson, Director of UWA’s Minderoo-UWA Deep Sea Research Centre, said records of this species usually come from “strandings, bycatch or the stomach contents of whales”, making “every encounter valuable in building up a picture of the animal’s geographic range, depth range and behaviour”, which is “so unique and rarely seen”.
