The same source added that four foreigners and three Afghans were injured in the attack, reporting that four suspects were arrested.

The nationalities of the foreign victims were not revealed nor whether they were tourists in this well-known city, where the Buddhas of Bamiyan were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001 and which is Afghanistan's main tourist destination.

"I heard a series of shots", said a resident contacted by AFP, who asked for anonymity, and who added that "the security forces immediately isolated the streets leading to the scene" of the crime.

Deadly attacks against foreign citizens have been very rare in Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021.

"The Islamic Emirate strongly condemns this crime, expresses its deep regret to the families of the victims and guarantees that all criminals will be found and punished", said, on the other hand, the spokesman for the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
