An explosion near the Marshal Semyon Budyonny Military Academy of Communications in Saint Petersburg, Russia, has left several people injured, according to Russian media.

According to the Baza portal, which is linked to the Russian authorities, seven people were injured, one of whom is in serious condition, and the explosion was caused by the detonation of World War II munitions.

A representative of the press service of the Kalininsky district administration told the Russian news agency RIA Novosti that the incident occurred at 8:00 p.m. local time (6:00 p.m. in Lisbon) on Tikhoretsky Avenue.

The official said that the alert was given by "a resident of Saint Petersburg", who "called the on-call service reporting a suspicious bang on Tikhoretsky Avenue, 3, where the Budyonny Military Academy of Communications is located.

"Seven victims needed medical assistance," he confirmed.

In a statement, the Leningrad Military District said that the explosion occurred "during the cleaning of one of the basement facilities" and that "an explosion occurred during the unloading of garbage into a dumpster".

"As a result of the explosion, seven servicemen were injured. All the injured were taken to the medical facilities of the Russian Ministry of Defense, where they are receiving all the necessary medical care," the statement said, quoted by RIA Novosti.
