A cat has been awarded an honorary doctorate in “cat-ology” by the University of Vermont in the United States, on the eve of the institution’s undergraduate commencement on Saturday morning.

“Max the Cat has been a beloved member of the Castleton community for years. He resides with his wonderful humans on Seminary Street and enjoys socializing with friends outside of Leavenworth,” the institution wrote on Facebook.

It added: “With a resounding purr of approval from the faculty, the UVM Board of Trustees has conferred upon Max Dow the prestigious degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, with all the privileges of catnip, scratching posts, and litter boxes.”

Max has lived with his human Ashley Dow in the area for five years, and is often seen venturing onto the university campus.

The feline enjoys hitching rides in students’ backpacks and providing emotional support, his owner told Vermont Public.

“At one point, because he stopped coming to campus, they built him a shrine. They had candles and everything. And they printed out a picture of Max and put it in a frame,” she said.
