Three Spanish tourists and an Afghan citizen were shot dead on Friday in the city of Bamiyan, in central Afghanistan. The information was released by the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency.

The spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry, Adbul Mateen Qani, confirmed that "three foreigners and one Afghan were killed" and another "four foreigners and three Afghans were injured" in an attack in the tourist city, without specifying the nationality of the victims.

However, according to AFP, which cites hospital sources, three of the fatalities are Spanish nationals and the injured are Norwegian, Australian, Lithuanian and Spanish.

"Unfortunately, tonight, in the city of Bamyan, there was a shooting against the public, in which three foreigners, including an Afghan, were killed and four foreigners, including three Afghans, were injured," announced Abdul Mateen Qani, adding that, so far, four people have been arrested.

"The Islamic State of Afghanistan strongly condemns this accident, expresses its deep feelings to the families of the victims and assures that all the criminals will be found and punished," he added.

The attack took place in Afghanistan's main tourist destination, where the giant Buddhas of Bamyan, destroyed by the Taliban in March 2001, are located, and is the first against foreign citizens since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021.
