The State Department said in a statement that it is “aware of the increased risk of violence against LGBTQI+ individuals and events by terrorist groups.”

Washington “urges U.S. citizens to maintain a high level of vigilance.”

The FBI issued a similar warning on May 10.

The FBI cited recent anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric from the social media accounts of the Islamic State group, which has called on its followers “to conduct lone-actor attacks on soft targets.”

The FBI alert also noted the 2023 arrests in Vienna of three suspected IS sympathizers who were accused of plotting to attack a march in the Austrian capital with knives and a vehicle.

In June 2016, a gunman killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. The shooter, Omar Mateen, who pledged allegiance to IS in a 911 call during the attack, was killed by police when they stormed the venue.
