Saudi Arabia makes history with first-ever swimsuit fashion show
Models paraded in swimsuits for the first time in Saudi Arabia on Friday, in an unprecedented event in the ultraconservative Muslim country where women were not allowed to leave their homes without the long black abaya.

"When we arrived, we realized that a swimsuit show in Saudi Arabia was a historic moment, because it was the first time," the designer told Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The show took place on the second day of the inaugural Red Sea Fashion Week, held in a luxury hotel on the island of Ummahat Alshaikh, off the west coast of Saudi Arabia, accessible only by boat or seaplane.
The birthplace of Wahhabism, a puritanical interpretation of Islam, Saudi Arabia has introduced social reforms in recent years under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, easing restrictions on women and opening up its economy to entertainment.
The world's top oil exporter has long been associated with repression of women due to the very strict rules imposed on them, such as the ban on driving and the obligation to wear the abaya, a traditional Muslim dress that covers women from head to toe.
These restrictions have been lifted in recent years, but the personal status law, which came into force in 2022, still includes discriminatory provisions against women.
"It's true that this country is very conservative, but we tried to show elegant swimsuits that represent the Arab world," Yasmina said.
"This is the first time a beach fashion show has taken place in Saudi Arabia, but why not? It's possible and we have it here," said Shouq Mohammed, a Syrian fashion influencer who attended the show.
Raphael Simacourbe, a French influencer who was also present, said the show was "a great success" in the Saudi context.
"It's very brave of them to do this today, so I'm very happy to participate," he said.
