A cargo ship was hit by a missile off the coast of the rebel-held Yemeni city of Mokha, which overlooks the strategic Bab al-Mandeb strait, where Huthi rebels have been stepping up attacks on commercial shipping.

The news was reported Saturday by Agence France Presse (AFP), citing the UK-based security firm Ambrey.

"A Panama-flagged general cargo vessel is reported to have been attacked approximately 10 nautical miles" southwest of Mokha, Ambrey said, adding that the information "indicates the vessel was hit by a missile and there is a fire in the steering gear compartment."

The attack has not yet been claimed.
