"Fifty people have been killed and dozens are missing after flash floods hit Ghor province on Friday," said provincial police spokesman Abdul Rahman Badri. The floods destroyed about 2,000 homes and damaged thousands more, Badri said. "The devastating flash floods also killed thousands of livestock, (...) destroyed hundreds of acres of agricultural land, hundreds of bridges (...) and thousands of trees," he said, adding that some roads had been "completely blocked". Other provinces in northern Afghanistan were hit by flash floods late last week and the severe weather is set to continue, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned. At least 300 people have died in the flooding, including in Baghlan province, according to the World Food Programme and Taliban officials. The downpours follow an unusually dry winter and several years of drought in the country, which is among the most vulnerable to climate change, experts say.
