According to Abdul Mateen Qani, spokesman for the local Ministry of the Interior, who spoke to the AFP agency, three Afghan citizens also died in the attack, two civilians and one identified as a Taliban.
The Afghan government had already reported the death of three foreigners, without specifying their nationality. Meanwhile, official sources from the Spanish government confirmed the death of three Spanish tourists in the attack. According to the EFE agency, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, said that a diplomatic delegation will travel to Afghanistan in the next few hours to repatriate the bodies of the three tourists, who were from the Catalonia region, as well as the woman, also from Catalonia, who is seriously injured and two other Spanish travelers who escaped unharmed. According to the accounts of the survivors heard by EFE, the attack took place on Friday afternoon, in the city's market area, where a man began to shoot indiscriminately at a group of 13 foreign tourists. According to information given on Friday by the Afghan Ministry of the Interior, four foreigners and three Afghans were injured in the attack. The same source said that four suspects were arrested for the attack. "The Islamic Emirate strongly condemns this crime, expresses its deep condolences to the families of the victims and guarantees that all criminals will be found and punished," said the spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior. Deadly attacks against foreign citizens have been very rare in Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021. In 2001, the Taliban destroyed the Buddhas of Bamiyan, Afghanistan's main tourist destination.
