"We have taken the decision to invest 10 billion zlotys [2.346 billion euros] in our security and above all, in the protection of our eastern border," Tusk told reporters, quoted by Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Donald Tusk's statements were made during the presentation of the 'Eastern Shield' project, which includes a system of fortifications on the borders with Russia and Belarus.

"This system of fortifications, which reinforces 400 kilometers of the border with Russia and Belarus, will be a deterrent, a strategy to push the war away from our borders," added the Polish prime minister.

The head of the Polish executive clarified that the work has already begun.

Poland, which borders the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad and Belarus, but also Ukraine, fears being one of Moscow's next targets.

The country has taken a stance of unconditional support for Ukraine since the Russian invasion in February 2022, and is also one of the main transit countries for Western weapons reaching Kyiv's forces.

In the face of the Russian threat, Warsaw has been modernizing its Armed Forces, with its Defense budget now representing 4% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the highest proportion among the countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Among the investments made are purchases of billions of dollars in military equipment from the United States and South Korea.
