The Communist Party Central Committee has approved "the appointment of comrade To Lam, military, member of the Politburo and Minister of Public Security, as President," reported the Vietnam News Agency, quoted by Europa Press.

The general, one of the most influential figures in the country, will receive parliamentary approval next week to formally assume the position.

On March 21, the Vietnamese parliament approved the resignation of Vo Van Thuong, who had held the Presidency for just over a year, and appointed Vo Thi Anh Xuan, the former Vice President, as interim President of the country until the election of a successor.

A day earlier, Thoung, 54, announced that he was resigning from the post amid an anti-corruption campaign that has reached the party leadership, with the Central Inspection Committee accusing him of violating the party's internal regulations, according to the Vietnamese newspaper "Tuoi Tre".

The Central Committee stated that such attitudes had led to a drop in his public approval rating and had affected the party's reputation.

Thuong, whose position is largely symbolic, took office in March 2023, two months after Nguyen Xuan Phuc resigned due to several corruption scandals in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.
