The head of the Catholic Church brought together today about 12,500 people in an initiative for peace held in the Roman amphitheater of Verona, in the north of Italy.

Francisco addressed, among other issues, the situation in the Gaza Strip and the conflict between Israel and Palestine, rekindled after the attack by Hamas Islamists on the ground of the Hebrew State, on October 7.

The Pope highlighted the testimonies of the Israeli Maoz Inon, who lost his parents, murdered by Hamas, and of the Palestinian Aziz Sarah, whose brother was killed by Israeli troops.

Both spoke before Francisco and declared to have united "in pain and suffering", which led the audience to applaud them standing, including the Pope himself, who embraced them next.

"I believe that there are no words before the suffering of these two brothers, which represents the suffering of two peoples. They had the courage to embrace each other", highlighted Francisco, emphasizing that that embrace "is a project for the future".

Asking the audience to pray in silence for peace, the Pope said to be "increasingly convinced that the future of humanity is not only in the hands of the leaders and of the great powers, but also in the hands of the peoples".

Regarding the visit to the prison of Montorio, also in Verona, the Pope also called attention to the risk of suicide among detainees and to the overcrowding of penitentiaries, in Italy as in Argentina.

Stressing that overcrowding results in "tensions and problems", Francisco appealed to the improvement of life in prisons, before the five hundred detainees who were listening to him.

Francisco also tried to encourage the prisoners, emphasizing that "life is always worth living".
