Parvin Moussavi, 53, a mother of two, was hanged in Urmia prison in the northwest of the country, along with five men, all convicted of drug trafficking, the Norway-based IHR said in a statement. In Nishapur, eastern Iran, a 27-year-old woman, Fatemeh Abdullahi, was hanged for the murder of her husband, who was also her cousin. The IHR said it had recorded 223 executions so far this year, including at least 50 in May alone, after a surge in the wake of the Persian New Year and the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan in April. Executions in Iran, one of the world's top executioners along with China and Saudi Arabia, are carried out by hanging. The Islamic republic executes more women than any other country, rights groups say, many of whom are victims of forced or abusive marriages. At least 22 women have been executed so far in 2023, the highest number in a decade, according to the NGO. "The international community's silence is unacceptable," IHR director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam told AFP. "Those executed belong to poor and marginalised segments of Iranian society and did not receive fair trials." The IHR said Moussavi had been held for four years before her execution. According to an unnamed source, she had been paid the equivalent of 15 euros ($16) to transport a package that she believed contained medicine, but which in fact contained five kilos (11 pounds) of morphine. Those executed are "cheap victims for the Islamic Republic's killing machine, which aims to instil fear in society to prevent further protests," the IHR said. The group also said that a member of Iran's Jewish community was due to be executed. The community has dwindled in recent years but remains the largest in the Middle East outside Israel. Arvin Ghahremani, 20, was sentenced to death for murder over a street fight when he was 18. He is due to be hanged on Monday in Kermanshah. The IHR also highlighted the case of Kamran Sheikheh, the last surviving member of a group of Kurds arrested in 2009 and 2010 for "corruption" linked to their alleged membership of extremist groups. Six others were executed in April. Iran has sparked international outcry after Toomaj Salehi, a popular rapper accused of supporting the 2022 protests, was sentenced to death. His lawyers have appealed. Hundreds of people were killed and thousands arrested in the demonstrations that erupted in late 2022 over the September 16 death in custody of Mahsa Amini, a young woman detained by the morality police for allegedly violating the country's strict dress code for women.
