The Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, said this Saturday that Spanish diplomats from the delegations in Pakistan and Qatar have travelled to Afghanistan to repatriate the bodies of the three Catalan tourists shot dead in an attack in the country.

According to the EFE news agency, a woman, also Catalan, who was seriously injured, will also be transported to Spain.

It should be noted that Spain has had its embassy in Kabul closed since August 2021, when the Taliban took power. In the recommendations published on the Internet, the Spanish Ministry strongly advises against travelling to Afghanistan.

Three Spanish tourists and an Afghan citizen were shot dead on Friday in the city of Bamiyan, in central Afghanistan. The information was released by the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency and the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has already stated that he is "shocked" by what happened.

So far, seven people suspected of having participated in the attack against the group of tourists have been arrested.

The attack took place in Afghanistan's main tourist destination, where the giant Buddhas of Bamyan are located, destroyed by the Taliban in March 2001, and is the first against foreign citizens since the Taliban returned to power.
