About 2,500 households in Brixham, England, are being told to boil their water after the UK authorities confirmed 46 cases of a parasite in the town's water supply. A storage tank, which was contaminated with Cryptosporidium, has now been drained and cleaned.

The boil notice initially affected 17,000 households. However, water quality test results have allowed about 14,500 homes to be removed from the restriction.

Cryptosporidiosis is caused by a parasite and leads to symptoms including vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhoea, Sky News reports. The symptoms can last for up to two weeks.

The number of confirmed cases is expected to rise, with more than 100 people reported to be showing signs of the infection on Friday. Officials believe the parasite entered the water supply through a damaged pipe in a field where animal faeces had been spread.

Council leader Anthony Mangnall said it was a "very serious issue" and suggested the public had been let down by the delay in issuing the alert.
