In Lisbon, in Largo do Intendente, a giant Palestinian flag was unfurled in the public road, while in London the protesters marched between the centre of the British capital and the Government's headquarters, in Downing Street.

The British police confirmed the arrest of a protester, whom they identified as the "leader of the chants", for an aggravated public order offence and alleged criminal damage for having chanted slogans such as "Intifada, Revolution" or "British government, beware. Palestine is back", according to the newspaper Daily Mail.

At the demonstration in Paris, the French President, Emmanuel Macron, was called upon to take a stronger position in favour of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the scene of a war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas since last October.

Meanwhile, in Berlin, several associations, including Jewish ones, demonstrated in favour of Palestine and to denounce the "genocide" of the Israeli forces.

According to the police, around 5,400 people took part in the demonstration, far more than the 2,000 initially estimated by the authorities.

The participants marched along the route between the Kreuzberg district and Berlin City Hall, in Alexanderplatz, under the slogan "Palestine will be free".

There were also protests in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, where the protesters expressed, like the other demonstrations in Europe, their solidarity with the Palestinian people and criticism of the war launched by Israel against the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip caused more than 35,000 deaths and close to 80,000 injured in seven months, according to data from the Health Ministry of the enclave, controlled by Hamas since 2007.

The current conflict was triggered by an unprecedented attack by Hamas in southern Israel, on 7 October 2023, which caused around 1,200 deaths and two hundred hostages, according to the Israeli authorities.

The Israeli retaliation is causing a serious humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with more than 1.1 million people in a "catastrophic hunger situation" that is already claiming victims - "the highest number ever recorded" by the UN in food security studies in the world.
