The three Spanish tourists who died in a shooting in the city of Bamiyan, Afghanistan, have been identified. According to the Spanish press, they were three Catalan citizens who were part of a group of 13 foreign tourists.

According to the newspaper El Periódico, the victims were identified as Ramón Bellmás Rimbau, a 72-year-old man from Girona and former director of a chemical company, Susana Vilar Bühler, 65 years old and from Figueres, and her daughter, Elena Schröder Vilar, 31 years old, from Barcelona. The mother and daughter were both pharmacists in Barcelona and Terrassa, respectively.

The bodies of the deceased have already been transported to Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, so that the Spanish government can organize the repatriation process.

In addition to the three dead, another Spanish citizen was injured in the attack. She was identified as Maria C.T., also Catalan, and, according to the Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, she is in serious condition after undergoing surgery.

El Periódico also reported that Ramón Bellmás and Susana Vilar were a couple and, in addition to Elena, the 65-year-old woman had three other daughters.

The attack, it is recalled, occurred on Friday after an armed group opened fire on foreign citizens in the tourist city of Bamiyan. In addition to the three Spaniards, three Afghan citizens died, including two civilians and one identified as a Taliban.

On social media, the Prime Minister of Spain said he was "shocked by the news of the murder of Spanish tourists in Afghanistan".

"I am closely monitoring the situation. The Consular Emergency Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working to provide all necessary assistance," he added, expressing "all my affection to the families and friends".

The attack took place in Afghanistan's main tourist destination, where the giant Buddhas of Bamyan, destroyed by the Taliban in March 2001, are located, and is the first against foreign citizens since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021.
