"The Nigerien Ministry of National Defense and the U.S. Department of Defense have reached a disengagement agreement to outline the withdrawal of U.S. forces, which has already begun," the statement said.

The document, signed by Niger's Minister of State and National Defense Salifou Mody and U.S. Undersecretary of Defense Christopher Maier, said the troop withdrawal "will be completed no later than September 15, 2024."

Niger's government, which emerged from a coup in July, denounced in March the existing military cooperation agreement with the United States, saying the American presence was now "illegal."

In the document, the two delegations stressed that the troop withdrawal "does not affect, in any way, the search for relations between the United States and Niger" and that both states are "committed to a continued diplomatic dialogue to define the future of their bilateral relations."

In April, Washington finally agreed to withdraw its 1,000 or so troops from the country and announced the dispatch of a delegation to Niamey to agree on the details of the pullout.

The United States has a major drone base in Niger, near Agadez, which cost about $100 million to build.

After the coup that overthrew elected President Mohamed Bazoum in late July, the new military regime swiftly demanded the departure of troops from former colonial power France and has moved closer to Russia, as have neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso, which are also ruled by military juntas and are battling Islamist insurgencies.
