Two people have died and five others are missing after a boat collision on the River Danube in Budapest, Hungary. The alarm was raised on Saturday night after a man was found with a head injury on the riverbank.

According to the Guardian, the bodies of a man and a woman were later discovered nearby. After several hours of searching, a boat was located and towed to the shore. Authorities are still searching for five adults, including three men and two women, who remain unaccounted for.

The search for the missing people involves around 90 people and several boats, drones and thermal imaging cameras are being used in the operation.

A damaged river cruise boat has been stopped more than 80 kilometres from the scene of the accident. Authorities believe that this vessel collided with the boat that was found sunken.

Criminal proceedings have been launched against a suspect on suspicion of endangering waterborne traffic resulting in a fatal mass accident. The identity of the accused has not been released.
