In the Kharkiv region, the focus of the offensive, the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor's Office said six people were killed and 27 wounded in a Russian strike on the outskirts of the regional capital, also called Kharkiv. Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said five more people were killed and nine wounded in an attack on the Kupiansk district, southeast of the regional capital. Russia’s Defence Ministry said on Monday that its forces in the area were continuing “to advance deep into the enemy’s defences”. Ukraine’s General Staff acknowledged that Russia had intensified its attacks around Kharkiv and that the situation there was “dynamic”. Russia launched an offensive in the Kharkiv region late last week, significantly increasing pressure on Ukrainian forces that are outnumbered and outgunned and are waiting for promised deliveries of crucial Western weapons and ammunition to arrive. Outgunned Ukrainian forces are trying to slow the Russian advance on the new front, using bomb-carrying drones to destroy military vehicles. Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday, during a visit to China, that Moscow’s offensive in the Kharkiv region was aimed at creating a buffer zone and protecting Russian border territory, but that there were no plans to capture the city. Meanwhile, both Ukraine and Russia have continued to strike each other with drones. Ukrainian air force officials said on Monday morning that air defences had shot down all 37 Russian drones launched against the country overnight. In Russia, Russian air defences shot down 57 Ukrainian drones over the southern Krasnodar region overnight, the Russian Defence Ministry said. Local military officials said debris from one drone hit an oil refinery in the town of Slavyansk-on-Kuban, but there was no fire or damage. The Astra news agency published video footage purporting to show an explosion at the refinery as it was hit by a drone, but its authenticity could not be independently verified. Nine long-range ballistic missiles and one drone were destroyed over the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula after a large Ukrainian drone attack on Friday morning that knocked out electricity in the city of Sevastopol. Three more drones were shot down over the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine. According to regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov, debris from a downed drone set the roof of a church on fire, but there were no casualties. The Russian-installed governor of the partly occupied Ukrainian region of Kherson, Vladimir Saldo, said one person was killed and 16 wounded when a Ukrainian drone struck a minibus on Monday morning.
