Maryland Gov. Wes Moore greeted the ongoing work on NBC News today, saying he hopes the span will be “back up by the end of May.”

On March 26 of this year, the Dali, a 1,000-foot-long, Singapore-flagged cargo ship, careened off course and slammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed in seconds like a house of cards.

Six workers who had been doing repair work on the bridge, all of them Latino immigrants, were killed. The Dali container ship has been blocking access to the important East Coast shipping port ever since.

Officials overseeing the salvage operation said the Dali was expected to be refloated as early as noon today (5 p.m. GMT), before being towed away with the Monday morning high tide, scheduled for 5:24 a.m. (12:24 p.m. GMT).

Tugboats will then take the Dali about a mile to a nearby marine terminal, a trip expected to take three hours.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge carried a major commuting route in the northeastern United States, connecting the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., with New York City.

The Port of Baltimore, meanwhile, is a hub for the U.S. trade in new vehicles, with some 850,000 cars and trucks having passed through it last year — more than any other American port.
