A man has been found dead and two police officers seriously injured after a bear attack in a north-eastern province of Japan. Residents have been warned to be on alert.
The officers were attacked on Saturday in the city of Kazuno, Akita prefecture, while retrieving the body of the man who had been found dead, Sky News reported, citing Japanese media. The officers are in a serious condition but their lives are not in danger.
The dead man had been found days after he went looking for bamboo shoots in a mountainous area. It has not yet been confirmed whether his injuries were inflicted by a bear.
A search is under way for the animal, involving a helicopter, and wooded areas in Kazuno have been closed “until further notice”.
Until the bear is found, residents have been advised not to go out at night and to carry bells or similar items to scare it away.
