One of the two candidates was injured in the attacks, which occurred Saturday night in Villa Corzo and Mapastepec, the state prosecutor's office said in a statement.

In Villa Corzo, the prosecutor's office initially reported three dead, but later confirmed that one of the wounded died in the hospital, and in Mapastepec there were five dead.

Caught in the crossfire of organized crime violence, the Chiapas region has been living to the rhythm of attacks on candidates for the municipal elections in recent days.

On Thursday night, six people were killed in Concordia, near Villa Corzo, including candidate Lucero Lopez, in an ambush after a campaign rally.

In San Cristobal de las Casas, the tourist capital of Chiapas, the Green Party candidate for the presidency of the municipal assembly, Linda Higuera Gutiérrez, also denounced an attack on her campaign team.

Since September, at least 28 candidates for local elections have been murdered throughout Mexico, according to the latest data from the non-governmental organization (NGO) Data Civica, released on Thursday.

The violence affects all parties, whether it is the left-wing in power, Morena, the PRI-PAN-PRD coalition, in the opposition, or the Movimiento Ciudadano.

Cartels and gangs are trying to "impose candidates" in the elections, the prosecutor for electoral crimes in the western state of Michoacán, Victor Serrato, recently explained.

The 'modus operandi' is more or less the same: "The criminals choose a candidate" and let the others know that they "have no right" to run.

Mexico is preparing to hold the largest elections in its history on June 2: presidential, for Congress and for the Senate, to choose nine governors in 32 states and in a myriad of municipalities. In total, more than 20,000 mandates are at stake.
